Featuring titles drawn from 94 countries around the world, Encounters Film Festival’s International Competition programme delivers extraordinary and original storytelling across a multitude of genres.

With over 100 films competing for the coveted Grand Prix titles in 18 eclectic programmes  exploring topics from Fake News! to Desire, Rebellion to Resolution, Intimacy to Isolation. Encounters Film Festival is an Oscars, BAFTA and European Film Award qualifying festival, with previous alumni going on to with these renowned awards. 

The 2019 award winners will be announced on Friday 27 September at the Encounters Awards Party, with a live performance of DJ Yoda’s Tarantino AV Spectacular!

Highlights from the programme include: 

Ani 4: GetReal - 8 films combining visual imagination with powerful non-fiction stories, this collection of anidocs are personal and deeply moving. Screening 26 Sept, 6pm - get tickets here.

LA 8: High Stakes - films in this programme range from harrowing to humorous encompassing contemporary issues exploring the different ways people put themselves on the line. Screening 27 Sept, 2pm - get tickets here.

Horror: Skin Crawl - this year’s Horror programme presents a selection of shorts guaranteed to send chills throughout the cinema, not for the faint hearted! Screening 25 Sept, 10pm - get tickets here.

This year’s jurys are made up of fine folk from across the film industry. As part of the Live Action Grand Prix jury this year, Encounters are joined by filmmakers Lara Zeidan, Tonia Mishiali and Eloise King. Making up the Animated Encounters Jury are; Head of the British Animation Awards Helen Brunsdon, Jen Hall, Producer and one of the founders of Manchester Animation Festival and animation producer Abigail Addison. And selecting the winner of the Immersive Encounters Grand Prix will be Sanne Jehoul, Co-Director of Glasgow Short Film Festival, Nicolas Burlet of Swiss Animation Studio Nadasdy Films and Charlotte Corchete Short Film Programmer from Locarno Film Festival.
